What do you get when you mix cute little girls with piercing yellow eyes, mutated deformities, and walking tanks that wield drills and psycho-kenetic powers? If you’ve played the first Bioshock, all of this should sound familiar to you. Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams is due out this Fall on 2K Games, and is shaping up to be much more than what fans of the series have been waiting for.Â
The game picks up 10 years after the conclusion of the first installment. For those who may not be familiar with the backstory, Bioshock chronicled the adventures of Jack, our otherwise unnamed protagonist and lone plane crash survivor, as he attemps to escape Rapture, an underwater utopia-gone-wrong.
After discovering the underwater city, Jack is forced to fight his way through legions of citizens that are addicted to ADAM, which consists of stem cells that are used to re-write the human Genome. Little does he know that things are far deeper than he could’ve ever imagined.
Players have conventional weapons (shotguns, wrenches, pistols) and plasmids at their disposal; plasmids are powers granted to players by injecting themselves with ADAM. In Bioshock 2, Rapture has declined even further due to a creature calling herself the Big Sister. It’s up to you to restore balance and all that good stuff.
According to 2K Games, Bioshock 2 will have a reward-based multi-player option. Instead of engaging as a nameless figure, each player will step into the shoes of a test subject for plasmids. By utilizing literally thousands of combinations of plasmids, you will essentially be able to customize your players any way you want. This could make for a large variety of opponents.
For those who have had an opportunity to play the first Bioshock, there should be a few noticeable differences right off. In Sea of Dreams, you take on the role of a Big Daddy, your former nemesis from the first game. You’re outfitted with a drill arm instead of a right hand, and your left hand is reserved for plasmids. The drill is upgradable, and will contain numerous modifications, including a flame thrower and other types of guns. Since you’re controlling a tool of destruction as opposed to a human, you can expect much tougher, enemy-filled battles.
Also, instead of being inside of Rapture during the entire game, players will be able to actually swim around the outside of the underwater city at will. With more and more details being released about Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams on an immediate basis, we’ll all know more soon.
