AAA games have an air of pressure around them.  Considering the money and the talent behind them, expectations have to be high. The Gears of War franchise has been a routine heavy hitter for Epic.  Cliff Brzezinski and his team have used this to create a benchmark for which all over the shoulder shooters will be judged. Make no mistake, Gears of War 3 is the best in the series, and leaves in its path huge shoes for any shooter to fill.

For most shooters, the Single Player experience tends to be left behind to focus on Multiplayer features. Gears of War 3 doesn’t sell out its fans who really care about the adventures of Marcus Fenix. This may be the most impressive thing up front; you actually get a single player experience.

The writing is impressive. Most shooters lend themselves to keeping subtitles on and plowing through cut scenes. Gears of War 3 brings you into the world of its characters, a lot more than the previous game in the series. The player really gets to see a lot of Augustus Cole’s personality early in the game, taking him from side character to more of a feature like Dominic Santiago. The character development of not just the  Cole Train, but of the rest of the team really brings emotion. By the end of the game, you feel like you know these guys even more, and care about their actions.

Character development means nothing if the game isn’t playable, and Gears of War 3 brings some subtle improvements to those used to playing previous games in the series. The biggest improvement is the RB button that shows the current objective. It streamlines finding your next objective so you can really focus on taking out the Lambent and the Locust. Add that with the solid controls, and you really can get to work pretty efficiently.

Once you are finished the campaign, you can start in on arcade mode. In short, arcade mode is a chance to play the game for points. Your scores are placed on a board and you can compare with your friends. It’s pretty easy to get a competitive thing going on with friends, even if you aren’t a huge fan of a deathmatch situation.

Of course, plenty people get this for the multiplayer aspect, and there is more here also. Co-op is now up to 4 people, this goes for Arcade and Campaign mode.  It makes it a bit more interesting when running with 3 of your friends on Insane instead of AI.

Horde 2.0 and Beast are two other cooperative play modes. For people who played Gears of War 2, Horde gets a facelift. Now it isn’t just a survival game, but more like tower defense. The addition of Towers and supplies makes Horde a lot more strategic. Epic ups the ante by adding boss battles every 10 levels.
Beast is the new addition to the series. This allows you to play as Lambent, doing your best to take out Humans and Locusts. It’s an interesting parallel running against as the mindless.  It is 12 rounds of mayhem.

It isn’t hard to tell after playing Gears of War 3 that it is worth its AAA distinction.  The single player experience is top notch. It lends itself to the budget; the writing, animation, and flow are top notch. The multiplayer modes have more than enough entertainment to keep you coming back for more. When things go to trilogies, there is usually an unsaid expectation of a letdown. We have all seen Terminator 3, no need to expound here. Video games are no exception to the rule, as short of Super Mario Brothers 3, many games experience at least a little bit of disappointment.

This isn’t the fault of the game as much as it is the fault of the medium. Visiting the same world three times often leaves little to the imagination. That is why it is that much more difficult to create a game that engages the third time around.

This is where Epic plans to deviate with the third entry in the Gears of War series. After a triumphant beginning with Gears of War, and once again outdoing itself with Gears of War 2, the third title in the series has a heavy shadow behind it. After about an hour of play with Gears of War 3, however, there is a chance that we might be seeing another title that can improve the third time out.

The first impression of Gears was one of fluidity. The controls feel very tight and very instinctive. Small improvements to the controls make the game feel even tighter to those who are used to shooters on Xbox 360. Also, you won’t be just in control of Marcus and Dom, the ability to use six other characters, such as Cole and Baird. Also, the option for four-player co-op adds a little bit more spice to your solo campaign.

The multiplayer is where the game improvements shine. Those who got a chance to play the multiplayer beta already got to experience the improvements. More may come, such as some of the new weapons that will be available, but more things are hinted in the full game, such as better squad command and maps that will be resurfacing.

No one wants to play experts when they just start. For those who fear jumping into insane competition, fear not. Casual mode makes an appearance. This will be a competition lock to ensure that you are playing against proper competition to make the game fun.

Horde mode, a favorite of many gamers who loved cooperative gameplay, has been restructured into Horde 2.0. You have the ability to gain points and build defenses to help you protect your outposts. Team work will be essential as bosses will appear much more often, and things will be that much more difficult with defenses to help you. If it helps, think of Horde 2.0 as tower defense FPS.

One of the more interesting modes to come around is Beast mode. This will give the anti hero lurking inside the ability to play the locust. Your goal will be to take out as many humans as possible over 10 rounds. After firing against them for so long, it’s going to be an interesting change of pace to get ahead of them.

For those who have something to prove with their solo gaming prowess, arcade mode may be for you. The premise is quite simple: beat a level as fast as you can for points. You get more for killing effectively, you get less for dying. Your points go up on a leader board for all to see. There will be ladders for the most competitive amongst us.

With the improvement of new modes of gameplay to explore, the maximizing of multiplayer options, both head-to-head and cooperative, and subtle yet interesting improvements to solo gameplay, there is much for gamers to like here. We will get a chance to see the full thing in September, but for now, while things aren’t looking good for Marcus, Dom and company, it is looking great for gamers.

Being developed by Capcom, the core gameplay is similar to that of the Street Fighter series, incorporating elements such as Super Combos, as well as EX Attacks from Street Fighter IV. Players each choose two fighters from the Street Fighter or Tekken character lists, the latter of which can be optionally controlled using Tekken‘s 4-button system.[4] As fights go on, players build up power in a three sectioned meter at the bottom of the screen. Players can use a single section to use an EX attack, or tag with a partner during a combo, or use a full meter to perform a Super Combo. Players can also charge up special moves such as Ken‘s Tatsumaki Senpuu Kyakku and perform Tag Super Combos with their partner. As opposed to the other crossover fighting games released by Capcom, in which the player must eliminate all the opponent’s fighters to win, victory conditions are more similar to Tekken Tag Tournament, in which the first player to have one of their fighter’s health reduced to zero loses the round, the player who wins the most rounds winning the match.

Street Fighter X Tekken is set to release early 2012 for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Playstation Vita and PC!

Halo 4 will be the seventh game of the Halo franchise and marks the beginning of a new trilogy in the series! Master Chief will return as the main character and Cortana will also appear in the game!

The game is said to pick up some time after Halo 3 left off.

The single player campaign storyline for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is said to pick up immediately after the events of Modern Warfare 2 with the continuing conflict between the United States and Russia. Players will be jettisoned around the globe taking on roles in various elite paramilitary forces such as the British SAS, Delta Force and the Russian Federal Protective Services.

Needless to say, the theme was all-pink-and-white-everything, with satin pillows, beach balls and even a T-Mobile motorcycle amidst the tropical greenery and real sand. Drinks in coconuts, a guy crafting art with fruit, tons of food, a massage lounge, a performance by Bay Area artists Dev and The Cataracs all made for a good time!
