RadioPlanet.tv: There’s a lot of buzz going around about you, not only from your fans, but a lot of industry and media people are really getting behind you right now.  Talk a little bit about how Felli Fel and various people have helped support you and get your movement out to the fans.

Nipsey Hussle: Felli Fel is big in L.A.; he’s one of the top DJs at Power 106. I got a company called All Money In and we was real heavy on the streets as far as promotion, getting these mixtapes out and trying to saturate the whole California market. At one point in time we had posters across the whole city of L.A., mixtapes in every liquor store, barber shop, mom and pops store and V.I.P Records, any means of distributing our product we had. 

If you were in L.A., it was impossible to miss us. We ended up signing with Jon Shapiro at Epic, and I guess he had a conversation with Felli Fel where he was looking to come to the west and find some authentic Hip Hop. Felli Fel said, “There’s only one dude who’s really doing his thing like that and it’s Nipsey.” Based on that, everybody connected the dots, called the lawyer up and we made it happen. 

RPT: New York media has picked up on you as well, for that to happen with you being from Cali and not having an album out is rare. How does that feel and who else have been some of your supporters?

Nipsey Hussle: I ain’t gonna lie, New York as a whole has really taken to my movement. A lot of DJs like Kay Slay, Whoo Kid, Envy, Suss One, Lazy K, Angela Yee, Tony Touch, ni**as everywhere. I had my folks in damn near every part of New York, so I already went to the people and put my music out, slapped hands and smoked blunts with ni**as and made my presence felt out there. 

I spent months and months hitting the radio, distributing my tapes and just putting my foot down out there. I knew that New York is the number one market in the country and the mecca of Hip Hop, so if they don’t stamp what you’re doing it’s kind of hard to break in with your music. 

RPT: You’ve been very open about your gang affiliations. How important is that to who you are as an artist?

Nipsey Hussle: At a point in time I was surrounded and overwhelmed by that, I didn’t have a record deal or a 9 to 5 job. I was in the hood 24/7 and that was my entire perspective. Even though I had traveled in the past and I was exposed to other things growing up, but for a long time leading up to me getting my deal the elements of poverty and gangbanging were my everyday surrounding and environment. 

That kind of explained why my music was saturated into that also, but as I move forward and get other experiences and my element expands, I want my music to grow with it. It’ll still be my perspective and foundation based off of where I came from, but I don’t think it’s gonna be saturated in my music now. I want people from other walks of life to still be able to see the truth and relate to what I’m saying.

RPT: Do you think music has made gangbanging a little more glorified than what it really is?

Nipsey Hussle: Yeah, most definitely I do. I think people have the image of a gangbanger or a gang member misconstrued like it’s glamorous or a rock star image or attractive to ladies. There’s only two outcomes to gangbanging [death or jail] people need to understand that’s not just what people say, that’s the true nature of this lifestyle and this mentality. 

When you see a person that was successful with rap music and they’ve become financially stable, then they  try to go back and pick up a rag to say that they’re a Blood or a Crip, it’s disrespectful to people that really grew up in that element. Not only in L.A., but in Chicago and other places where gangbanging is real culture and not just a fad, it’s a real dominant culture for the streets. It’s almost a slap in the face and disrespectful to the people that have died over that and are still knee deep in that lifestyle. 

It’s also disrespectful to themselves, because they’re not being 100% true to themselves and they know that’s not their experience and lifestyle and they’re trying to sell it as an image. I think it don’t really connect with the people, it kind of leaves the people with a sour taste in their mouth. They don’t feel the authenticity, if this is your story and your truth there’s a way you go about it without glorifying it. That’s what I respect.

RPT: You’re very much a young entrepreneur. You gave up your clothing store so that you could get your own studio. How hard was it for you to go from fashion into doing your music 100%?

Nipsey Hussle: It wasn’t really with the store when I fell back and made that decision, it was before that. I used to do my thing in the streets before I had the store. Before I had the store I sold my cars, jewelry and everything I had and focused everything on music. I’m not trying to be cliché and say I quit hustling to rap, but I really made a conscious decision to take everything that I considered an asset and put it into my music, because I felt like my music could take me to a level that the streets could never take me to. 

Part of that was my t-shirt store that I opened with my brother, we began selling everything out of there and that was our central location. My music movement was before the store, but once we got the store that was like the location for our t-shirts, hats, merchandise and mixtapes, and it made my movement that much bigger. I was always a grinder and a hustler, I used to shine shoes when I was eight years old, I used to sell candy and cut grass. 

I used to do everything for myself, because I always had the mentality to go out and get it myself, because I never used to like asking my mama and she’d tell me we didn’t have any money because she just paid the bills. Ever since I was young I didn’t like somebody telling me young, I didn’t want my mama to have to feel guilty, so me and my brother always used to have to go get it ourselves.

RPT: When you tell people how hard you hustled to get to where you are, do you think they take it for granted and think they could get a shortcut if you hooked them up?

Nipsey Hussle: Some of the up and coming artists have the right idea and some are totally lost and blind. The unbiased truth is that there’s no shortcuts. Some people get blessed in the game when a major artist comes and signs them or a major producer endorses them, some artists gotta do it like me and just build it up from zero. The one thing that I would tell an up and coming artist is you gotta make a decision and stick to it for better or worse. If this is what you gonna do, you gotta do it. If it’s not what you gonna do, fall back and find something else. But you can’t be in the middle straddling the fence where two weeks you rap and a month you don’t, then an artist comes out that inspires you and you rap again, then you don’t rap. You just gotta stick to your guns and find something else. 

RPT: Because you work very hard and you’re so focused on what you do, do you feel it’s possible to balance a relationship and is that something you even want at this time?

Nipsey Hussle: I think it’s possible. Right now that’s not my aim or goal, but it all depends on what your objective in a relationship is. If you just want somebody that you can call whenever you hit their town and hang out, that’s possible. But if you’re looking for a wife or an everyday companion, that’s kind of hard to do when you’re traveling, moving around and trying to stay at the forefront of your movement and hold a position in this game. 

In my opinion it’s next to impossible, because at the end of the day you gotta give priority to one thing or another. You gotta give priority to your relationship or your career; I’d think it’s kind of hard to balance. Now if you’re at a stage where you’re Jay-Z and you’ve transitioned and you’re falling back, it’s kind of different. But if you’re just getting in this game and trying to establish and make a name for yourself, my personal belief is that you can only give your priority to one thing at a time. 

RPT: Have you had any situation where a girl has done something really crazy to get your attention online or otherwise?

Nipsey Hussle: I’m not gonna say they did anything crazy to get my attention, what they usually do is scream and try to hop on stage or hop on the bus and make it clear what they’re willing to do. I don’t wanna get into too much detail but they get wild, especially when you’re on tour. They do next to anything, you tell ‘em to do a cartwheel naked and they’re liable to bust out and get to doing splits. I’m focused though, so I take it with a grain of salt. It’s fun to add to the experience and the excitement, but I ain’t really turned on by groupies. That don’t really stimulate me.

RPT: What are your favorite songs that you’ve worked on from your forthcoming album?

Nipsey Hussle: Hands down, my favorite record on my album is called “Blue Laces”. It’s one of them songs that sums up everything, if I was to play one record to establish a fan that would be it. Mr. Lee from Houston produced that, he did a lot of work with Jeezy, UGK, and Bun B. But it’s just one of those records that’s real powerful; it got a spirit in it. So when you hear it, if you’re in a room by yourself or the car or studio, you gonna feel the spirit that’s in that record. That’s one of the records that I’m proud of. 

Aside from that, I’m still working on the project. I got so much music, I’m getting ready to let a lot of it leak to the internet because I got to the point where I have so much music that there’s no way all of it is gonna make the album. Certain records people need to hear right now, I just leaked them a couple of days ago.  So I’m just trying to reach my peak creatively before I drop the album. 

RPT: When is the album coming out?

Nipsey Hussle: It’s coming out December 22, 2009. 

RPT: Are you doing any touring this summer?

Nipsey Hussle: Yeah, we just came off the LAX tour with Game, we did 44 cities. We’re getting ready to go on tour with Snoop and a rock band called Slightly Stoopid, that’s like a 22 city tour. Then we’re putting together a One West tour where we tour all of the cities on the west coast. So far it’s gonna be me, Jay Rock, Jayo Felony, Game, I think Mistah F.A.B., Glasses Malone, U-N-I and a couple other West Coast artists are gonna hop along.  

We gonna be everywhere, I just came from DC and New York; I’m going to Miami to work with The Runners. I’m going back to L.A. and going in with J.R. Rotem. We’re moving, and ’09 is finna be a good year for Hip Hop and the West Coast.    

We also spoke with Soulja Boy about his upcoming Gangsta Grillz mixtape, why he put out the word for Jay-Z and Kanye West to get at him for his next album, and what some dedicated fans have done to get his attention.

RadioPlanet.tv: Tell us a little bit about the “I Got MoJo” video shoot.

Soulja Boy: The song is off off of my upcoming Gangsta Grillz mixtape with DJ Drama, I shot it with DJ Whoo Kid riding through NYC in a Lamborghini, right after I finished doing 106 & Park. It’s all about the swag, it’s all about 2009, it’s all about the movement, it’s all about Soulja Boy in 2009. Shout out to DJ Whoo Kid.

RPT: You’ve said that in the beginning of your career you made a lot of fun dance songs because that’s how you felt, but that next time your music will be more representative of you. What do you feel will be different than what we’ve seen thus far?

Soulja Boy: Going into this third album, it’s all about me. This is gonna be my realest album, my biggest and best album to me. How the public will feel about it, I don’t know. You might have a lot of people that love the dance songs, but I feel that this is gonna be my biggest and best album because it’s the realest album that I’ve put out so far.

RPT: How do you deal with haters and the media saying things about you that you might not like?

Soulja Boy: I just live life and stay positive, I believe in hard work and dedication. I believe in dreams, having goals and accomplishing them. I made my first million dollars when I was 16-years-old, can’t nobody tell me nothing. I live my life how I want to live my life, I take care of my family, my little brother and sister and a lot of people. A lot of people depend on me, I’m not the type of person to depend on people. I never liked to depend on another person, I always liked to do for myself.

So when people that I don’t even know or that I never met in my life that have opinions on me”¦you can dislike a person’s music but if you have opinions on me as a person and it goes beyond music, I really don’t believe or pay attention to any of those things. I do believe in constructive criticism and taking other people’s advice on improving my lyrics and things of that nature, but when it comes to talking about me as a person, I don’t believe in listening to stuff like that. But I always stay grinding, dedicated and humble.

RPT: Do you feel like you’ve had to grow up fast over the last couple of years with your business?

Soulja Boy: I’ve always been the type of person to be hands on with my business and my money, and I always want to be the type of person to learn more about everything that I do. I want to learn my craft and business, and I feel as if I got to the point where I got it down to a science with the way I market myself through the internet, and the buzz that I create around myself and my career, and building my Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em brand up to where it is now. Any venture I do or hobbies that I have – whether it be fashion and sneakers or video games – whatever I do, I like to learn, pay attention to other people and perfect my craft.

RPT: You recently announced that you’re reaching out to Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne, Jay-Z and others to work with you on your next project. How important do you feel it is for rappers of their stature to come back and work with artists like yourself who are growing and learning?

Soulja Boy: I feel as if you’re a real musician or a real person, you’ll take the time out to work with me. I’ve met a lot of different people since I’ve been in the entertainment industry, and I’ve had conversations with T.I., 50 Cent and Usher, people that have been in the game way longer than I have. I’ve come across people that act like they don’t want to be a part of working with me or whatever, then I met real artists that’s down to earth like myself that don’t really got a big head and will keep it 100 with you.

Those are the type of people I look forward to working with. If I reach out to a person and they act like they’re better than me or something like that, I don’t take it personal, because each person is different and everybody’s not gonna keep it real and want to work with you. That’s just life.

RPT: Do you ever feel that some of these [more established] people might be intimidated by you? You’ve set the music industry on end at a time where others are struggling.

Soulja Boy: In the past I’ve reached out to artists to work with me on something I felt could be really big, and now that artist is in a position where they really need me now. I took an artist like Sammie who hasn’t been around for years, and now we got the Number One record in the country for 10 weeks straight [“Kiss Me Thru the Phone”].

I’m just glad I work with real artists – it don’t matter how big your buzz is. When I went to Sammie, he wasn’t as hot as Chris Brown or T-Pain, but we made it happen with hard work and determination and we went to Number One. I like to work with real people and real artists.

RPT: What is the craziest thing a girl has done to get your attention?

Soulja Boy: When I was on tour I’d have girls show up to my concerts and be hiding out in my tour bus and dressing room, I’d have girls follow me from one state to the next, following my tour bus for four or five cities straight. That’s why I always thank the fans, me being the type of artist that I am I try to give back as much as I can, because it’s a lot of girls that actually think I’m their boyfriend that are in love with me. I understand that so I try to keep them happy.

RPT: Who are some of the key people that have been there throughout your career that you’ll be working with on your new album?

Soulja Boy: Of course I will be working with Jim Jonsin once again, he did “Lollipop” for Lil’ Wayne, “Whatever You Like” for T.I. and “Kiss Me Thru The Phone.” I look forward to working with Polow Da Don again, he did “Yamaha Mama” featuring Sean Kingston on my second album”¦ but I don’t like to work by name, I like to work by ear.

I know a million producers that are no-names, but they got hot beats. I will be going back in the lab to produce beats on this album, I really haven’t produced since my second album, but I’m looking forward to doing a 50/50 split beat with Kanye West. I think that’ll be hot because he’s a great lyricist, but an awesome producer as well. I feel like I’m an awesome producer too, and both of us in the studio together at the same time can come out with a smash.

RPT: When can we expect the new album?

Soulja Boy: We’re looking at late September/early October.

RPT: What is your summer looking like?

Soulja Boy: I’m putting together the Swag On Tour. They want me to do the Scream Tour, but I don’t know yet. I’m on the road 24/7, so my schedule is booked until July but I’m all about running around and grinding hard. Recently I just did the XXL magazine cover, the DUB magazine cover, the Ozone magazine cover, Right On! magazine, Jimmy Fallon and Jay Leno‘s shows, Good Day New York, Good Day L.A., 106 & Park, I’ve been nominated for a BET Award, and I’m performing at the BET Awards as well.

RPT: Do you ever worry about overexposure?

Soulja Boy: At one point in my life I did believe that I was putting too much of my life out on the internet and in the public eye, period. I felt like I had to slow down on that bit, so I cooled down for a while. I used to tape everything I did and put it on the internet, but I cooled down.

RPT: What’s the number one thing you want people to know about Soulja Boy right now?

Soulja Boy: I am here to spread the message that any dream and goal that you have can come true and be accomplished. I’m walking proof that I had a dream to become a famous rapper, and I made it happen with hard work and determination. I know I’m probably one out of a million, and stories like mine probably don’t happen very often. It’s very rare for a person like me to do this, but I want everybody to know it’s not impossible to do what they want to do with their life.

RadioPlanet.tv: Today we’re premiering “They Hate” on RadioPlanet.tv, and in the video you’re looking at various blogs with people talking negatively about you. How does it make you feel to log on the internet every day and see that?

Tony Yayo: It doesn’t bother me, my skin is made out of rubber. You see a lot of people do blogs and they’re just hating in general. It could be anybody, Floyd Mayweather, Ricky Hatton or Magic Johnson. You could put something positive on the internet and people will say “First” and things that are irrelevant to the blog… why even waste your time? I’m gonna waste my time to hate on somebody, that’s where the concept for “They Hate” came from, and you know n*ggas hate the Unit. Everybody hates G-Unit but we not mad, we making our money and doing what we gotta do. But a lot of people in the industry are hating.

RPT: How do you feel about people who have gone online and tried to impersonate you?

Tony Yayo: To me that’s the same thing, I’ve had people who have hit me up and say, “Somebody has a Tony Yayo page.” That’s a form of hate too, because what are you doing? You’re gonna make a fake page and put some stupid sh*t up there or something that’s irrelevant to make me look silly. I think that’s a form of hate too.

RPT: Have you ever felt like some of the beefs throughout your career have been blown out of proportion by fans or the media?

Tony Yayo: The smacking of Jimmy Henchman‘s son, I didn’t do it, but he lied and said I did, so the media’s just gonna run with that. The Daily News slayed me, [Jimmy Henchman is] Game‘s manager, I didn’t smack the kid and they’ve been praying for our downfall since we had the fallout with Game. The Daily News went too far with that one, I have three kids, so that’s one thing that really bothered me.

But I’m used to it, I’m down with G-Unit, nobody likes 50 Cent so nobody likes me. When I’m in a shelter in the Bronx taking care of some kids, getting them food from McDonald’s and buying them stuff for their class, that’s never in the newspaper, or something that somebody wants to talk about. But as soon as somebody gets smacked or shot, that’s something everybody wants to talk about. They’d rather have the negative than the positive, and with that whole situation I was exonerated on the charge, but I went through a whole bunch of bullsh*t where people thought I actually smack little kids.

If you say something enough times, people will believe it, even if it’s not true. The media is your judge and jury, people started saying G-Unit fell off when the media was running with that and publicizing “Gangsta rap is dead” and people read into all of that and feed into it. The media controls a whole bunch of sh*t, they make and break you.

RPT: As far as technology and promotion is concerned, do you feel like this new generation of rappers has a leg up on what G-Unit has been able to do in the past? Do you feel you’ve had to struggle to keep up with it?

Tony Yayo: I feel like it’s a gift and a curse, because records are not selling, period. A perfect example is Soulja Boy, he has two hit records from this new album that’s been out since November, and he’s only pushing two [hundred thousand] and change. I wouldn’t say the artists aren’t doing good right now, I just feel like we went from ADAT to tape to CD to iPod. A couple of years ago when G-Unit came out, to me it was more special.

The internet is a gift and a curse. To me, when an exclusive comes out and a certain DJ has it and all the DJs don’t have it, it’s a bigger record. But now it’s like once you drop a record, that sh*t is in everybody’s iPod by the next half an hour. But if you remember a couple of years ago, a point where a dude would drop a mixtape and Jay-Z, Big L or Big Pun was on it, you was excited to go to Jamaica Ave. and pick up the CD. That’s the kind of person I always was, so to me the game is less exciting from what I’ve seen being home for six years.

RPT: How was it coming home to new technologies, and how fast have things changed for you over the past six years?

Tony Yayo: When I came home in 2003 or 2004 they had the camera phone. But I’ve been home for a while, so I’m accustomed to everything. Me, Whoo Kid and G-Unit are able to change no matter what because we map the game. We went to viral so fast with ThisIs50.com, we caught it early and then you saw everybody follow 50′s lead.

We’re up on sh*t earlier, like how we took advantage of the mixtapes, I think every artist that’s making mixtapes right now is really looking at the G-Unit pattern. Mixtapes were relevant, but the way we did it, we wanted something new. We got deals off of the mixtapes, went on a mixtape tour. Now I’m putting the mixtapes out virally. I don’t really care if they even touch the streets, because more people log onto the internet than buy copies in the street. I think you just gotta learn how to change with the times, and LL Cool J is the best man for that job. This guy has been around since he was 15 or 16 in 1985, and his last album was last year. It’s all about changing with the times with the viral stuff that’s going on.

Companies aren’t really generating money off of artists anymore, Rick Ross isn’t going Gold. How much money did Def Jam spent on him? You’ve seen all of his blogs dissing G-Unit, he was going all around the U.S. How much money you think that bus was costing, and the hotels and the n*ggas he had with him?

To me, I look at the business like a lot of n*ggas aint even worth it, you might as well go independent and do your thing. You gotta understand, me and Banks never had 360 deals, the deals 50 gave us on Interscope we weren’t giving up half of a clothing line or anything. A lot of labels are doing 360 deals now because they want to get money all over the board, being that records aint selling, so they want to figure out other ways to get money from an artist. Me, I’d rather go independent and make all of the money for myself instead of get raped by a label that don’t really care about you.

One thing I learned about the industry is that there’s no friends in this s**t. Like I told Whoo Kid, I have the same lawyer that Triple C’s [Carol City Cartel/Rick Ross] has and I looked at [my lawyer] as a friend and I was misconstrued. I thought he was my friend and I went to trusting him, but no he’s not my friend, it’s just a business partnership. I don’t even let myself get upset because I know that these n*ggas in the industry is b*tch a** n*ggas. I understand how Tupac and Biggie got killed, because the motherf*ckers that was around them gave up the itinerary, that’s how them n*ggas got killed. It wasn’t no other way, somebody around them gave up the itinerary to let them know where n*ggas was gonna be at, and that’s how the game is.

I look at the game totally different. When I came home I was excited, million dollar crib, cars and everything. Now I look at the game different and for what it is, these n*ggas aint friends. How can my lawyer want to represent somebody that wants to ruin my brand? If you’re there to help me, why are you helping somebody that wants to ruin my brand? That’s just how the game goes.

RPT: Have there been any recent beefs that you feel were overdone?

Tony Yayo: I think the “Gay Unit” cartoons and the homo sh*t that Rick Ross was saying was a little carried away. A lot of internet sites get promotion because of G-Unit. You could hate us but if a n***a is talking about Tony Yayo, Lloyd Banks and 50, the hater wants to see what the other hater is saying about us. We’re bringing traffic to your website, and the whole internet s**t with Rick Ross is a ploy for promotion. Rick Ross never had that much promotion ever in his life, and he still didn’t do no numbers because people knew he was a cop. It’s not my fault you was a cop. Then later on down the line you sat on Big Boy‘s show and admitted that was you in the picture.

I don’t give a f*ck if he was number one in the country because it’s not showing in his record sales. I feel like on the internet some places advocate G-Unit hate, you gotta understand a lot of these people used to work for magazines and certain people just don’t like the Unit. A lot of people just like to hate, and it’s a disease. I’m not a hater, it’s just that a lot of my drama came from all of the drama that 50 had. A lot of sh*t trickled down on me because I’m so close with 50 that I wound up with his problems, but I don’t mind though because I know n*ggas don’t like me anyway. It comes with the territory.

RPT: What do you have coming next?

Tony Yayo: I’m working on adult films. I [directed] my first adult film last year, and I’m working on my website, since everybody got a regular website I decided to have one for my adult films. I’m working on my music and my mixtape The Swine Flu has caused a lot of interest in Florida even though it’s not out, because a lot of people are interested in what I’m gonna say after Rick Ross and Khaled said n*ggas ‘can’t come to Miami’.

I learned a lot of lessons in the industry – I’m grown now and I know a lot. There’s not too many friends in here, it’s a crazy business. I heard Hoopz say that online the other day, she does her sex tape with her boyfriend and he’s blackmailing her, she does the second show and becomes a bigger star, and he puts the teaser out trying to get money. It’s a wicked business. My whole motto is trust no one.

RPT: I think this Radio Planet “They Hate” video is going to do well for you.

Tony Yayo: It’s a lot of hate on the internet, it’s so bad that I put the video out, and if they hate I’m not even gonna read the comments. That’s how bad it is for me, because you’ll read them comments and it’ll ruin your f*cking day. I don’t have time to read somebody’s comments that’s behind a desk that got a problem with me and I don’t even know them. Truthfully, I really don’t even care. I’m about to start having fun with music again, because when you start being pressured to make a hit record and be a certain way in the industry you start falling off from who you are.
