Ciara stars as Amara Winter in the upcoming movie Mama I Want to Sing, based on the long-runningÂ off-Broadway play of the same name.Â The film co-stars Lynn Whitfield, Patti LaBelle, Billy Zane (Titanic), Ben Vereen,Â Hill Harper, Kim Porter (aka Mrs. Combs),Â Kevin Phillips (Pride, The Cookout), and Marvin Winans as the Reverend.

Originally slated for release in the Fall of 2008 (and still listed as such on the official website), it was rescheduled for Spring ’09, then June, and now rumors report that it will be out in October. Still, there is not a firm date being reported as of yet.Â Rumor has it that both gospel singer Tarralyn Ramsey and former American Idol contestant Paris Bennett auditioned for the role that Ciara ultimately landed.

Amara Winter, a strikingly beautiful and charismatic young singer, is on the verge of pop stardom.
