The Karate Kid Trailer! Jackie Chan, Jaden Smith, Taraji P. Henson in 2010 Remake!

Admit it. You giggled when you saw the title… but this is one remake that already looks kickass, literally. The Karate Kid is due out in June 2010, and stars young Jaden Smith in the lead, Dre Parker. Of course his parents Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are supporting the production of the film along with Will’s Overbrook Entertainment partner James Lassiter and others.

The plot is pretty cut and dry… Dre and his mom (Taraji P. Henson) move to China, and after he gets bullied by local kids, the kindly Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) teaches Dre how to defend himself. The noticeable difference between the campy ’80s classic and the 2010 version is that Jaden  actually looks like he’s trained pretty intensively – the fight scenes probably won’t be as simple as that single crane kick that made Ralph Macchio famous. The acting should be above par… it’s doubtful that the Smith family is investing in B-grade performances these days.

There is already some fuss about the title, since they are in China (the film was shot in Beijing) and it’s called The Karate Kid, although there is also a working title for the movie of Kung Fu Kid, which would be more appropriate. Either way, American audiences love their pop culture, so changing the title probably wouldn’t be the best idea at this point.

Do you think you’ll check this out next Summer? Let us know your thoughts!
