As a follow up to his 2008 Best Actor win at the Cannes Film Festival for his portrayal of revered revolutionary Che Guevara, Benicio Del Toro is going to the dark side in The Wolfman. Directed by visual effects specialist Joe Johnston, The Wolfman is a remake of the 1941 film about Lawrence Talbot (Del Toro), a man who is bitten by the fearsome creature and cursed.
Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada) plays the heroine and love interest, while legendary actor Anthony Hopkins stars as Talbot’s father and Hugo Weaving (The Matrix‘ Agent Smith, Lord of the Rings‘ Elrond) is the detective investigating the trail of wolfman murders. Meanwhile, rocker Gene Simmons will bring the wolfman character to life with howls and growls like only he can do.
The screenplay should provide an interesting mix of action and drama, as Andrew Kevin Walker (8MM, Se7en, Sleepy Hollow and the upcoming Armored movie) teams with David Self (Road to Perdition) to interpret Curt Siodmak’s (who passed away in 2002) original 1941 story.
Originally slated for a Fall ‘09 release, Universal Pictures has now pushed The Wolfman theater date to February 10, 2010.
