What do you get when you cross cute people and roller skates with an “I need to find myself” storyline? You might have thought ATL, but in this case it’s Ellen Page, best known for her roles in Juno and Hard Candy, in the dramedy Whip It.
Page plays a small town Texas girl named Bliss who has been forced into beauty pageants by her mom, only to rebel in her teens out of sheer unhappiness. In her angst, Bliss comes across a roller derby crew led by Smashley Simpson (Drew Barrymore, who also makes her directorial debut). Bliss gets on board with the rugged rollers, and has to deal with the aftermath of her parents’ disappointment amongst other things.
Co-stars in Whip It include veteran actress Juliette Lewis, comedians Jimmy Fallon and Kristin Wiig (SNL) and sitcom starlet/rap diva Eve. With a ring of colorful character names like Malice in Wonderland, Dinah Might, Bloody Holly and Rosa Sparks, there should be some interesting interaction. Ellen Page actually dropped out of doing Drag Me to Hell to take on her role in Whip It. Was it a smart move? I guess we’ll find out in October!
